Where to stay in Malé & Hulhumalé
The capital and the airport islands: practical, busy and the gateway to everywhere else.
Malé is the capital: a densely built island city of markets, mosques and cafés. Hulhumalé, a reclaimed island next to the airport, is newer, greener and quieter, with a designated beach area and many guesthouses and hotels aimed at short stays. Villimalé is a small residential island a short ferry ride from Malé. Most visitors use these islands for a night before or after a flight, though they also work as a first taste of Maldivian daily life. Alcohol is not sold on these islands outside licensed venues, and modest dress is expected away from designated bikini beaches.
